Carrie Tuggle

Early in her career as a social worker, Carrie Tuggle recognized a widespread need for the care and instruction of abandoned and wayward youth. With that as her central focus, she opened the Tuggle Institute in 1903. Its curriculum offered an array of courses, including education, nursing and music. Among the notable students of the institute were famed businessman Dr. A. G. Gaston and jazz icon Erskine Hawkins.
